1998 Fishing Journal

Saturday, June 6th

Received a call from a fishing buddy who moved away to Utah two years ago. Bill Kendal told me that he would be passing through town on Saturday, June 6th and wanted to know if I wanted to go fishing and whether I know where they were hitting.

By 5:15pm we were in our float tubes kicking hard out to Meadow Point in Steamboat Lake. We were both using the weighted black Woolybugger that had worked so well the previous few weeks. This time, however, we had thrown about 50 cast without a strike. Bill switched over to a fly he ties himself called the "Kendal Killer". I have seen Bill’s "killer" fly before and it is very sorry looking. I admit that I have bad-mouthed it some when he showed it to me. (I know better.) Bill tied on the "Kendal Killer" and in three cast had hooked three fish.

I am not one to argue with success. So I kicked over to him and begged for a "Kendal Killer."  I had to grovel some and tell him how great this fly was and that it was better than all the flies in my nymph box. Bill gave me two and in the first four cast I had hooked up on fish. Nothing of any size, but compared to how we were doing I was having a blast. I caught one 15-inch Snake River Cutthroat and Bill claims he caught a 16-inch rainbow. Between the two of us, once we switched over to the Kendal Killer,"  we each caught between 20 and 25 fish. Again as soon as the sun went behind the mountain the fishing action stopped completely.

I am now a believer in the "Kendal Killer". If you would like a picture of this fly and tying instructions e-mail me. It is easy to tie because Bill ties it without much difficulty and he is all thumbs.
